Case Study: Total Home Renewal
This brick rambler was dramatically transformed into a pleasing blend of modern contemporary and traditional touches that perfectly reflect the lifestyle and taste of our clients. Warm and comfortable, yet dramatic and open, this home features improved flow between all spaces and offers an excellent venue for both entertaining and day-to-day activities. A true cook's kitchen with island allows for efficient work flow and interactive entertaining. The new Master Suite and luxury bath – comfortably separate from the kids bedrooms and play areas – provide privacy and refuge for busy parents.
Challenge
Integrating our client's contemporary style into a traditional home, while maintaining a warm atmosphere.
Solution
Utilized Arts and Crafts and Mission detailing to bridge the gap between the traditional and contemporary styles. Used timeless, earthy materials in dramatic and unexpected ways, such as slate tile wall in the Powder Room and vertical orientation of tile accents in Master Bathroom and Kitchen. Integrated metal accents in traditional and contemporary colors and maintained clean lines in styling of light fixtures and hardware. Employed the use of contrast to provide interest and crispness to the space, while complimenting the client's contemporary furnishings. Warm paint colors round out the welcoming atmosphere.
Challenge
Dramatically increasing the square footage without making the house look too massive. Designing the new second story to be in scale and appropriate for the neighborhood.
Solution
Staggered roof lines break up mass and create well-balanced façade. Push and pull of staggered wall planes, and use of natural elements provide texture, warmth and character.
Challenge
Creating dramatic open space while maximizing natural light in a relatively small footprint/floor pan.
Solution
Retained or enlarged existing window openings as possible. Followed roofline in foyer to create a dramatic and open space. Utilized columns and kneewalls to create definition of Dining Room space while maintaining openness. Cathedral ceiling in Family Room employed to add volume while opening up to small vestibule at rear with kneewall and column. Created circular flow and intuitive traffic patterns to enhance feel of open floor plan.
